Be able to summarize the early period of research of authentic leadership. Who are some of the
scholars known for research of authentic leadership? What were their research questions?
Authentic leadership was identified earlier in transformational leadership research but never fully
articulated. Practitioners had developed approaches to authentic leadership that were not evidence
based, and so needed further clarification and testing. Efforts to conceptualize it continue on today.
Some of the scholars known for research of authentic leadership are: Bass, Howell, Avolio, George
and Sims, and Shamir and Eilam. They wanted to know the "how to" steps to becoming an authentic
leader.

How are the practical and theoretical approaches to studying authentic leadership similar or
different? How do they compare to the teleological and deontological approaches to studying ethical
leadership?
The practical approach to studying authentic leadership evolved from real-life experiences and
training and development literature. The theoretical approach is based on findings from social
scientific research. The teleological approach to ethical leadership is based on what is good or
desirable as an end to be achieved, and is comparable to the practical approach. The deontological
approach to ethical leadership derives from the concept of being bound to a specific job or duty. It
can be compared to the theoretical approach.

Why is authentic leadership hard to define? Describe the three different definitions of authentic
leadership. What does each definition contribute to our understanding of this concept?
There is no single accepted definition of authentic leadership. There are multiple definitions written
from different viewpoints and with a different emphasis.
Intrapersonal Perspective: focuses on what goes on within the leader, leaders exhibit genuine
leadership, lead from conviction, and are originals
Interpersonal Process: authentic leadership is relational, created by leaders and followers together.
Leaders affect followers; followers affect leaders
Developmental Perspective: authentic leadership can be nurtured in a leader rather than be only a
fixed trait It develops in people over a lifetime

What are the five basic characteristics of authentic leadership, according to Bill George? How does
George's approach compare to the trait approach? The Big 5?
Passion
Behavior
Connectedness
Consistency
Compassion
George's approach can be compared to the trait and Big 5 approach because in each, there are five
must-have characteristics to being a good leader.

What is the difference between passion and compassion in George's AL model?
Passionate individuals have a deep interest in what they do and genuinely care about their work.
Compassion refers to being sensitive to the thoughts and feelings of other people. Leaders who are
compassionate are the ones who lean toward authenticity.

How are the dimensions of AL related to the characteristics of AL in George's model?
Each dimension is directly correlated to a characteristic:
Passion-Purpose
A leader with purpose is authentic when they are passionate about reaching the goal.
