Teaching Suggestions
This chapter introduces students to information systems and helps them to understand why information
systems are essential to running a managing a business. It defines an information system, explains how it
works and identifies its people, organizational, and technology components. Throughout the text, we ask
students to consider these elements as they assess information system challenges and solutions. It also
introduces a four-step method for business problem solving that students can use to solve information

,system-related problems. It concludes with a description of the information system skills and knowledge
that are essential for business careers and a section that illustrates how students can use the material in
the chapter to help find an MIS-related job.

Opening Case: Smart Shelves Reinvent the Retail Space
The opening case introduces a number of important themes that are reinforced throughout the book.
The opening case diagram is a great way to highlight the people, organization, and technology elements
that worked together to create an information system solution to the business challenges discussed in the
case. You can ask students to think about the following questions as they read the case:
• How do AWM’s systems change retail operations?
• How do AWM’s systems improve customer experience
• What ethical concerns do AWM’s systems raise?

Section 1-1: Understand why information systems are essential for running and managing a
business.

This section gives students a feel for the importance of information systems in business today and how
they have transformed businesses on the world stage. A good discussion of the seven important business
objectives outlined in Section 1-1 allows the instructor and students to discuss why businesses have
become so dependent on information systems today and the importance of these systems for the survival
of a firm. Stress to students that information systems are not a luxury. In most businesses they are the
core to survival. This would be a good time to ask students to discuss how their own schools are using
information systems to enhance their product offering.

Table 1-1 is a great way to introduce students to much of the new IT jargon that has developed over the
last several years, including cloud computing, Big Data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and AI. All the
technologies listed in the table will be discussed in greater depth in subsequent chapters. Ask students
how much hands-on experience they’ve had with some of the new business tools as either an employee
or a customer.

Video Cases: The Essentials of MIS Video Case package for each chapter consists of a short video in
which a senior manager describes how a business is using opportunities from new information
technology to pursue strategic goals and enhance business performance. The video is accompanied by a
case study that expands on the video along with 3 multiple choice questions and 2 short essay questions.
There is a video case in each chapter. There are number of ways that you can use the text’s Video Cases
to engage students, including:
• assigning a Video Case as material to review prior to a lecture, and engaging students with
questions regarding the material as it comes up in the lecture.
• viewing the video with the class and then having groups of students present their answers to the
questions in class.
• using the Video for discussion in class, or online in discussion boards, and then using the
questions as prompts for student discussion.

Video Case videos and associated case material (case description and questions) are embedded within
the eText. Video Cases (in PDF/Word file format, with a link to the video, case description, and
