There is a high need for nurses to care for patients in a population that is growing by the minute
(Rudnitzski, Curtis, & Griffie, 2018). Oncology patients often have complex interventions applied to the
many treatment options. Translational research uses the knowledge of the human body, laboratory
testing and clinical trials to develop interventions that are relevant to cancer treatment. This type of
research helps develop inferences for those who could be at risk for developing cancer. All of these
things are used to create nursing standards and practice for the oncology world as well as ensuring
patient safety and maximizing protocol adherence (Rudnitzski, Curtis, & Griffie, 2018).
Translational research is the newest approach in bridging basic research and clinical practice (Lopes-
Júnior, Olson, de Omena Bomfim, Pereira-da-Silva, Nascimento, & de Lima, 2016). Translational research
has provided new knowledge in many areas, especially in oncology. Through transformational findings
gleaned from laboratory research, advanced tools were developed to aid in the development of
processes and application of therapies (Lopes-Júnior, et. al, 2016). Important biomarkers were
discovered from clinical data that have led to great strides in cancer research (Lopes-Júnior, et. al, 2016).
All in all, it is plain to see that translational research has really advanced the oncology world.
Using the GCU library, the topic of oncology piqued the most interest. The importance of clinical trials,
laboratory testing and knowledge of the human body is necessary to the outcomes and the disease
process of cancer. This is a great population for T4 translational research because of the fact that the
translational research used is population-based, but also based off of individual clinical trial outcomes. It
is best to use translational studies to first determine individual outcomes and identify whether these
results can be applied to a large population standard. These trials need to be randomized and controlled
at the same time in order to provide the lowest risk of bias in assessment of treatment options (Klafke,
Mahler, von Hagens, Wensing, Schneeweiss, Müller, Szecsenyi, & Joos, 2017). The data resulted through
the clinical trials are used to evaluate the circumstances the intervention that was developed works.
Being able to understand the intervention is important to be able to interpret results (Klafke, et. al.,
2017).
