1.1 Name and describe in your own words, five South African inclusive policies that have been
developed to address issues of diversity and inclusivity in South African school. (10)
a) The South African Constitution
The Constitution sets out South Africa's values, the rights of the people, how Parliament and the other
legislatures work, how the national and provincial executives are chosen, and how the courts work. It
is the basic principles and laws of a nation, state, or social group that determine the powers and duties
of the government and guarantee certain rights to the people in it .
b) The South African Schools Act (NDoE 1996)
It mandates the admission of learners and provision for special educational needs. The Act mandates
private schools to comply with the principles of the government of non-discrimination.
c) The Integrated National Disability Strategy (NDoE 1997a)
The strategy promulgates the integration of disabilities into all initiatives of the government inclusive of
education.
d) Education White Paper 3: A Programme for the Transformation of Higher Education (NDoE 1997b)
It advances the need for an equitable and just system of higher education that is free of all forms of
discrimination inclusive of discrimination on the grounds of disability. The paper mandates people with
disabilities to be afforded a fair chance to access and achieve in higher education institutions.
