, There are many parts of the human body that makes us function as what we perceive to

be normal. This paper will cover a focused and complete health assessment on hypothetical

patient for both the tympanic membrane and the thyroid gland with posterior and anterior views,

normal and abnormal findings, and diagnostic testing needed to help in diagnosing. Combined

data will show how important all parts to a patient assessment is in correctly diagnosing

patients. Description of the normal and abnormal Tympanic Membrane

The Tympanic Membrane, frequently known as the eardrum, is pearl grey, cone shaped

and when viewed the wider part of cone is facing out, it is oval, slightly concave, and pulled in at

its center. (Jarvis, 2016). The TM translates sound vibration from the outside environment to

inside, so we hear. One very common but abnormal finding is otitis media. This is an

inflammation of the middle ear behind the eardrum and is very common in children. A child’s

eustachian tube is shorter, wider, and positioned horizontally making it easy for bacteria to travel

from the nasal passage to the middle ear. Viewing the tympanic membrane on a child would

require the observer to pull slightly downward during a health assessment.

Focused health assessment related to the tympanic membrane

(S) Peyton is an 18-month-old female that presents to the pediatrician’s office with fever,

irritability, not eating or drinking like normal, and tugging at her left ear. Max fever

reported by mother 103.4 at 0400 this morning with Advil/Tylenol given in rotation per

dosing guidelines. Mother also states the “congestion and coughing has gotten a lot worse

over the last 72 hours and during the night she spiked a fever”. Vital signs were taken, all

WNL including temp which is being well controlled with mom’s administration of

Advil/Tylenol. Weight and height charted and WNL for her age. No dizziness or

decreased hearing noted by mother.
