Grading Categories
Grades will be divided into two categories: Assignments and Assessments. Assignments will make up 30% of
the yearly grade and Assessments will make up 70% of the yearly grade. There will be no extra credit awarded
in this course.
 Examples of Assignments may include the following: any tasks related to the school wide expectations
(Safety, Work Ethic, Accountability, Giving Respect) – lab/classroom/emergency drill safety,
participation, completion, meeting deadlines, being prepared and on time, graded work, checks for
understanding, showing consideration, maintaining classroom/materials, proper use of technology,
etc.
 Examples of Assessments may include the following: any assignment where the student is given the
opportunity to demonstrate understanding of priority standards – unit/standard assessments, lab
assessments, projects, written work, etc.
The yearly grade will comprise 90% of the student’s overall grade. Chemistry does include a final exam that
will account for the remaining 10%. I work very hard to put grades in Infinite Campus in a timely manner and
expect students and parents to refer to IC regularly to monitor progress. I will not use unscheduled class time
to check grades.

**Special Notes on Grading: Grading current work takes priority over other work (late work, makeup work,
etc.). Your grade in Infinite Campus (not Canvas) is your current grade.

Learning and Relearning
At Cooper, we value learning and understand that sometimes students do not learn at the same pace. We also
know that many students need to develop better habits such as completing and turning in work on time, doing
homework, spending time outside of class studying, and not falling behind in classes. To help improve learning
and school habits, Cooper is adopting the following in all classes as it relates to learning, meeting deadlines,
and reassessing:
 Students must turn in all Assignments before the initial unit assessment (or completion of a unit) in
order to receive a score for those Assignments.
 Students who have not reached mastery on an assessment (less than 90%) may retake that assessment
to replace the grade if they made a valid first attempt.
 In order to retake an assessment, students must complete relearning before retaking the assessment.
This relearning is approved by the teacher but will not directly affect the course grade. Relearning may
include one or more of the following: attending tutoring, completion of all relevant Assignments,
completion of additional work, test corrections, completion of an online module, etc.
 The deadline for completing a reassessment is 10 school days after the initial assessment grade is
posted in Infinite Campus.

Teacher discretion will be used when necessary.

Personal Statement
It is very important that you review your daily work, homework, and labs frequently! This is especially true
because your work has a purpose. Most assignments have one or more of the following aims:
 Preparation provides information – history, skills, definitions; intended to allow you to benefit when
the new material is addressed in class.
